9 Common Mistakes

1. High Expectations for Little effort

high_expectation“The real secret to success is to get out there and work like hell,” – Frank Kern

The first and the biggest problem for an internet marketing newbie is that they enter the online marketing world with entirely wrong expectations. The guilt for it is mostly on spammers who have flooded the internet with „get quick rich“ promises – within just a few weeks, and with minimal effort, you become a millionaire.

So this is what most newbies do – they jump in but are not prepared to work. They want money quickly. So they choose a niche that they are not passionate about yet looks profitable. They try to monetize their websites too early; they stuff their websites with too many ads; they attempt to sell rather than help; all these things lead to failure, of course. Online business is also a business, and it requires hard work to build it up.

2. Lack of Planning and Research

„Without a strategy, content is just stuff, and the world has enough stuff,“  — Arjun Basu

The second most grave mistake newbies tend to make (and something you want to avoid) is that…

plan before you start building your business…They hardly do any planning and research. They jump in, pick their niche, learn to build a WordPress website, and write blog posts.

After that… Off they go.

Building a website is effortless these days. So easy that even primary school students can do that.

Really? Really! Click here to create a beautiful and fully functional WordPress website in less than 3 minutes (It’s FREE. No credit card required).

To build a profitable business, though, requires at least some kind of planning and research.

Here’s the good news!

To do that, you don’t need to go to university. Seriously! Some excellent step-by-step courses on the internet will help you. And the best part of it – they won’t cost you a fortune.

Are you looking for such a place?

Look no further. It’s here. Go and see if this doesn’t blow you away.

3. Bad Attitude

Good attitudeAttitude is a little thing that makes a big difference,” – Winston Churchill

It is frightening how many people enter the online marketing world with a bad (or downright awful) attitude. They are spammy, use too many gimmicks, copy-paste other peoples’ articles and blog posts from their works, make false claims to their customers, etc.

Let me forewarn you, dear friend. This road might be tempting; it may promise you excellent returns with little effort. At the end of the day, though, it will backfire badly.  And guess what?

YOU will be the one who has to pay the price.

Somebody has said: “A lie may take care of the present, but it has no future.” Cheating and using unfair methods may give you some short term success but only short term. Marketing is about relationships, and to succeed, you have to build relationships; you have to build trust. Without trust, you don’t have customers. Without customers, you don’t have an income. Work to improve your attitude.

4. Poor performance

Poor performance„Good copy can’t be written with tongue in cheek, written just for a living. You’ve got to believe in the product.“  – David Ogilvy

Some keywords here: Poor website, poorly written copy, inadequate web design, impersonal marketing, etc. You can sell crap but only short term. When people find out that your product/website/content is crap, they click away and never return.

Why is impersonal marketing not a so right choice? Because Internet marketing is about building customers’ trust. People tend to buy from those they trust. If they don’t trust you, then they don’t want to buy from you.

Scammers cheat, and so they have to hide who they are. If you do impersonal marketing, if you don’t tell people your real name or how to contact you, people tend to think that you are too scammers. You will do a lot of good for your online campaign if you provide your customers with your real name, photo, and a short, genuine profile. And don’t forget to let your customers know how to contact you.

If you want to see an example of transparent and personal marketing, take a look at Pat Flynn’s website smartpassiveincome.com. Pat is a successful marketer, and he tells you that a big part of his success is based on his honesty and transparency when communicating with his customers.

5. Bright Shiny Object Syndrome

Bright Shiny Object SyndromeHave you ever heard of it? I hadn’t, yet I still fell into the trap. So what is it and how to avoid it?

Your present situation is this – the internet is full of online marketing tutorials, courses, programs, teachers, coaches, mentors, etc. Everybody proclaims that he and his product is the best and fastest way to make money online.

You do your research and settle for the benefit that you feel most comfortable with. You start your program to build up your online business. Then do some online research you stumble upon another great marketing product. The new product promises much, and somehow you feel that the new product is a better, easier, and faster way to success. You jump to another boat and start again. Soon after, another great product will appear, and you will change the ship again. You run after every new shiny object, yet never being able to accomplish your goals.

The solution here is to pick up one product, settle with it, and stick to it. There are plenty of good products out there that help you to build your business. If you are looking for a suitable and trustworthy platform to start, I suggest you join Wealthy Affiliate. It is entirely free and what you will find is a wonderful community of like-minded marketers, tutorials, step-by-step courses, 24/7 help, etc.

6. Taking no Action

Taking no Action„The longer you’re not taking action, the more money you’re losing.” –Carrie Wilkerson

If you enter into the online marketing world as a newbie, you will soon discover that there is so much to learn. And this is the place where most newbies stumble. They are afraid to fail, so they prefer to learn things first. Learning itself is good, but the problem is that they only learn and never put it into practice.

If you don’t practice, the problem here is that if you don’t build your website or write blog posts, you never earn a penny. I, too, struggle here. It is a great temptation to learn a little bit more before putting those things into practice. Yet to get the best out of it, the process must be balanced – you learn new things, and then you practice. You learn from other people, but you also learn from your own experience. This way, by learning and practicing, you build up your online campaign. Again, Wealthy Affiliate is the right choice here because its courses and tutorials are convenient.

7. Wrong time Management

Time management„You may delay, but time will not.“ – Benjamin Franklin

Here the most relevant keywords are wasting time, postponing, and inconsistency. If you are a 9 to 5 labor worker, it is pretty simple for you – you go to work on time just because you have to. If you don’t, then you’ll have a problem. It does not matter if you like your job or not,  you have to do it or you’ll have a problem. Yet if you want to work at home and be your own boss, you’ll have to deal with how you use your time, or else you won’t survive online.

a) Wasting your time

So you work at home and are your own boss. You can start whenever you want and work as few or many hours as you wish. Simple? Not so! Especially when working online. There are just so many distractions out there, so many obstacles, so many temptations that prevent you from working. All the emails, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media streams you want to check and respond to, all the news you wish to follow and read. Yet the time is running, and the day will be over before you notice. I struggle with it. Most people struggle with it. So you need to discipline yourself and get rid of the distractions (close email and social media accounts, switch off popups, etc.), work hard to improve your time management. Here you find some time-saving tips and tricks for work-at-home moms and dads.

b) Postponing

People tend to delay tasks that they don’t enjoy, right? As I wrote before – I am excited to learn new things. At the same time, I tend to postpone practicing (= writing blog posts). Yet the postponing may quickly become a habit which won’t help your business. Content Marketing guru Neil Patel has a great quote: „Don’t stop when you’re tired. Stop when you’re done.“ Another problem with postponing is that all these undone tasks accumulate on your shoulders, and you feel greater and greater pressure. Finally, you feel that you cannot handle the situation anymore; you give up and quit.

Working at home and being your boss is great, but it requires that you either have self-discipline or you develop it.

c) Inconsistency

Inconsistency is the characteristic that kills your traffic and all the hard work that you have put in to build your campaign. Ask any seasoned online marketer, and they will tell you that inconsistency is the key to failure. Google and Bing love consistency and reward regularly updated websites with higher rankings. This is why you should pick the niche you are passionate about – if you don’t love what you are blogging about, you won’t have the power to blog regularly.

8. Wanting to Be Perfect

Done is better than perfect“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” -Salvador Dali

If you are like me, then you too are afraid to make mistakes. Yet this fear forces you to be perfect. You start your blog, but you want it to be perfect before publishing your new blog post. The problem is that you’ll never reach perfection. You only lose a lot of time always polishing your articles and never publishing them.

I still struggle with it, but I have learned that I, too, will never reach perfection. I have learned that I am not at the same level as professional bloggers in terms of blogging and writing. I have a temptation to write as well as them. I have to be realistic – I am not able to. Yet I can give my best, publish a blog post and move on to the next one. With the weeks, months, years passing, I get more experience and also become professional—the same with you. So don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You can learn very much from your mistakes.

9. Trying to Go it Alone

“No one ever succeeds without the help of others.” – Jay Abraham

To drive my point home, let me illustrate it with a small beautiful example from Nature.

V-formation to boost efficiency and rangeHave you ever seen birds migrating? If you have, then you know migrating birds use V-shaped formation. Why? To boost their efficiency and range.

For example, for Canadian geese, it is discovered that in V-formation, these birds can fly 70% longer distance than alone. Wow! Can you imagine!

And that’s why birds who leave behind usually perish. Sad, but that’s how it is.

Online marketing is challenging… If you try to succeed alone. Therefore, trying to go it alone is a terrible idea. Most people (especially novices) who try to do it do not survive. Sooner or later, they give up and quit.

There are tons of heartbreaking stories about sincere newbies who have lost both their savings and years while trying to succeed online alone.

That is why a good support team is crucial.

When you start your online journey, you’ll have so many questions that beg for answers. When you get stuck, where will you turn for help?

If you are like me, then you feel the same ways – so weak and vulnerable alone. There are tons of scams online trying to trick you and free you from your hard-earned money. How to avoid all those scams? I have joined the Wealthy Affiliate community, and it is a good place to be. It is a secure place with excellent support, and this encourages me. It is also free to join, so it does not cost you a penny, yet you will be part of a great team and 24/7 support. You can read my Wealthy Affiliate review here. Conclusion

These common mistakes kill something like the majority of the online marketing campaigns that newbies start. 97% of bloggers quit within their first year. So try to avoid these nine common mistakes. You move ahead faster, avoid a lot of frustration, save time, energy, and money, and most probably also your online campaign.

You have a lot of very good content. However, you may want to consider a balance in your not “wanting to be perfect” and “going it alone.” I have read a few of your articles and have seen a few mistakes in each. Not a really big deal, grammar mistakes and added words that don’t belong. You might want to either proof read your work or, maybe better yet, have someone else give it a quick once over. When I proofread my own work, I often overlook mistakes. I already know what it is supposed to say, and I just see what I know it is supposed to say, not what it really says. Overall though, good content.

    • Ohh…Wow! Thank you for the feedback, Shelley. I am very grateful that you took time to give me feedback and some recommendations as well. In fact, I know the problem that my English is not perfect (I am not a native speaker). It’s been so frustrating you know.

That’s why it was so encouraging to hear that at least the quality of my content is ok. Thanks God for that! And second, that these mistakes are not a really big deal.

Let me see what I can do to improve the situation. Maybe I can find somebody to help me proofread my content. I know I desperately need it. And thank you, Shelley, for pointing this out to me. I am very grateful. Seriously!

      God bless you,

      Egon
