High-definition (HD) videos are the thing these days, that’s for sure. So if you want to preserve your memories through video, then it’s the way to go.
That being said, do you know what’s better than HD? 4K, that’s what! In line with this, I will look at one of the best 4K video cameras available today – the Panasonic Lumix GH5.
So what about the Panasonic 4K video camera – is it worth buying?
4K provides unbelievably smooth yet crisp images indeed. It delivers the excellent resolution you haven’t even thought possible until you’ve seen and experienced shooting in 4K quality. A bit of a warning, though: once you go 4K, you can never go back, especially not when your eyes can already discern the difference. Please don’t say I didn’t warn you!
OK, here we go:
Best 4K Video Camera: The Panasonic Lumix GH5
If you want to level up your game and get a 4K digital video camera, may I entice you to take a look at the Panasonic Lumix GH5? That’s the camera that I am going to feature and review in this article today.
Here are, in my opinion, some of the best features of this camera:
1. Element-Proof
This camera is made out of a magnesium alloy body that is freeze-proof down to a temperature as low as 14 degrees (F). Aside from that, the Panasonic people have also equipped it with a beautiful dust-proof body complete with weather-sealed buttons and joints.
Excellent, do you agree?
2. Image Stabilization
Motion blur is a great touch to a photo when showing the speed and action—that is, if it is used correctly. What’s unacceptable, though, is when your picture or clip gets blurry just because you’ve forgotten to bring your tripod, and you can’t hold your breath long enough to get the shot right; or you can’t get your hands to stop shaking!
Don’t you hate it when that happens? I do, too! That’s why this baby’s image stabilization feature is a welcome addition to this piece’s list of features.
3. Photo Splash
A well-placed blur can add drama to a shot; that’s true. However, having the ability to capture a millisecond suspended in time is even more dramatic. The problem is, having that detailed shot by balancing your camera’s aperture and shutter speed is no joke. And before you know it, the moment’s long gone!
Well, the Pansonic Lumix GH5 has a secret to share. It has a 6K photo mode that captures at 30fps for those perfectly timed shots. Besides, it also has a 4K photo mode that captures at 60fps for even faster motions.
4. Two SD Card Slots
Finally, and what’s probably my most favorite feature, is that it’s equipped with two SD card slots. In this way, you won’t have to worry about quick memory card changes while on the go. Or, you can choose to back up critical shots to the other card as you’re making them.
Next, Technical Specs
Anyway, for camera geeks, here are some of the Panasonic Lumix GH5’s specs:
- 3MP
- 4K video recording at 4K 60/50p (8-bit) and 4K 30/25p/24p (10-bit)
- 4K frame rate at max. 60 fps
- The full high-definition frame rate at max. 180 fps
- 5mm terminals for your mic and headphones
Pros
- Lightweight yet durable construction
- Shoots well even in low-light situations
- Has a brilliant zoom capacity
- Has a long battery life
Cons
- Autofocus is a bit problematic
- Limited selection on the lens
- The headphone jack is in front of its flip screen
Summary of the Features
This camera is a real workhorse when it comes to shooting 4K clips. It delivers professional-looking footage for a smaller and more discreet camera. I also like the fact that thanks to its quality, you can do a lot with your clips. You can crop it, zoom in, slow it down—and it still won’t lose its original quality.
The only real downside that I don’t like about this camera is that its headphone jack is positioned in front of its flip screen, which can be annoying. Not only does it get in the way of the screen when you’re flipping it over, but once you do manage to flip it somehow, the cable gets in front of the screen!
Nevertheless, that’s my only complaint so far.
How Does It Compare with Similar Cameras?
What About Sony 4K Video Camera
To give you a better insight into how this camera performs compared to other cameras of the same caliber, here’s how I think it measures up against an entry-level professional camera like the Sony PXW-FS5 XDCAM.
In terms of video quality, the resolution and frame rate of the Sony FS5 certainly offers more options, and their 4K performance is up to par. Both of them have dual SD card slots that you can customize to your specific needs.
However, the most significant difference, at least for is, is the size and the build of the body. Sony PXW-FS5 is bigger, and therefore, heavier. What’s more, it doesn’t have the element-proof durability that the Panasonic Lumix GH5 offers.
In the end, both can be hailed as among the best 4K video cameras of today. However, for those who want their shooting experience to be more discreet, or you’re someone who shoots while on the go, then the Panasonic Lumix GH5 certainly proves to be the better choice.
Verdict
Here is my Panasonic Lumix GH5 final verdict. When it comes to the required skill level to use this camera, I believe that you have to have advanced skills.
The features of this camera, in our opinion, can be best utilized by someone who’s a little bit more experienced in the field of filmmaking and production. Not to mention that the interface of the menu options of this camera can still be improved.
Its price can indeed be viewed as an investment, but it’s actually pretty affordable compared to other 4K cameras given the features it can do. If you want a cheaper camera, I recommend that you opt for an HD camera instead.
Taking all of its features and flaws into account, I am going to rate this camera an 8 out of 10. The bottom line is, despite the couple of design flaws that we have noticed, this unit still gets the work done. And at the end of the day, that’s all that you really need, right?
