However, Brian’s Skyscraper technique requires you to find your competitors backlinks. Therefore, you face the question – How to find those backlinks?
Well, Brian recommends using either Ahrefs, Open Site Explorer, or Majestic SEO tool.
All three are excellent backlink checkers. There is only one problem.
They are not free.
Yes, they do have free trials, but if you want to have a backlink checker in your toolbox, you still have to order it.
That’s why I took the pain and put together the following list of backlink checker tools 2016.
The first 11 backlink checkers are payware, with free trials.
The last 10 are completely FREE tools.

Afrefs SEO tool is one of the best tools to analyze websites, check and build backlinks, track social media, etc.

Because Ahrefs is a power tool, it comes with a price tag. There are three different ahrefs.com monthly pricing plans:

- Standard – $199 (Free trial)
- Advanced – $399.
Also, you can go yearly if you want.

There are four monthly pricing plans for Open Site Explorer:
- Standard – $99 /month (Free Trial)
- Medium – $149 /month (Free Trial)
- Large – $249 /month
- Premium – $599 /month

Open Site Explorer offers you a free 30-day trial.
For that, you have to order their Standard or Medium Subscription (Note! Paypal or Creditcard required). The first 30 days you get free. After 30 days you pay either $99 or $149 per month.

- Free – $0 (it is free, but quite a limited option)
- Standard – €59 /month
- Expert – $149 /month
Free Trial
As I just told you, WebMeUp offers a free (but heavily limited) subscription plan. The good thing, however, is that they put no time cap on it (14-days, 30-days, etc.)
You can use it freely as long as you want. That’s significant, isn’t it?
7. SearchMetrics
Searchmetrics.com – A power suite for enterprise companies is the global leader in SEO marketing and analytics, SEO optimization, social and content marketing.
Also, according to their words, “Searchmetrics and BrightEdge are the largest Enterprise SEO and Content Performance platforms globally.”
Pricing Plans
Searchmetrics offers four different pricing plans. However, three of them offer Price on request.
- Essentials – $69 /month
- Suite Business – Price on request
- Suite Enterprise – Price on request
- Suite Ultimate – Price on request

They offer a free Searchmetrics software demo. However, you must request it by giving them your contact information.
8. Backlink Falcon
Backlink Falcon Software Bundle.
They offer 2 main products:
- Backlink Falcon – super fast live link checker. It helps you verify thousands of backlinks quickly, ping hundreds of links easily, let the Search Engines find your links faster, etc.
- Quick Spy – website backlink checker that allows you to find the existing backlinks of any internet site. Also, it spiders several link sources, does an advanced link analysis, etc.
Pricing Plans
There is only one option – you purchase the whole bundle.
Backlink Falcon regular price is $129.99. However, they offer you their discount price $79.99.

9. SEO Spyglass
SEO Spyglass is a website backlink checker tool & link popularity checker.
With SEO Spyglass, you can find website’s backlinks, discover the keyword anchor text in backlinks, see the pagerank of every link, identify traffic sent from each backlink, etc.
The good thing with SEO Spyglass is that they let you download a Free SEO Spyglass Software. It suits for Windows, Linux, or Mac.
However, the free edition is quite a limited version. It allows just 1,100 links per project. Not much, right?

SEO Spyglass offers three different pricing plans:
- Free
- Pro – $124.75 one time fee
- Enterprise – $299.75 one time fee
The Professional edition is designed for website owners and webmasters. The Enterprise edition is the right choice for professional SEO experts and SEO companies.

- LinkAssistant Enterprise – $299.75
Free Trial
You can download the free LinkAssistant Edition – a nice tool for link building and management. No time limit and no credit card required. But it is still a limited version. 1,000 prospects per project only.
11. SEOprofiler
SEOprofiler.com – A full-featured SEO software, which gives you all that you need to get high rankings on Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.
Includes Link Analysis, Link Building, Keyword Research, Ranking Monitor, Social Media tools, etc.

There are four monthly SEO Profiler pricing plans:

Traffic Travis Free Edition is a free SEO Software for SEO & PPC Management challenges. It helps you with both on and off page analysis as well as spying on your competitors.
However, the Traffic Travis Free Edition is limited, and they recommend to order Traffic Travis Professional Edition.
Pricing Plan
Traffic Travis v4.2 Pro – $97.00 (12 months access). It means only $8.08 /month which makes it apparently worth to consider, don’t you think?
However, try it out in the first place and see if you like it.
13. Screaming Frog – A FREE (limited) TOOL.
Screaming Frog – SEO Spider allows you quickly crawl and analyze websites’ links, images, CSS, scripts, and apps.
In fact, it is a small desktop program (Windows, OS X, Ubuntu), which you can download and install locally on your computer.
However, the Free version of the ScreamingFrog SEO spider is limited. That’s why they recommend you to purchase their SEO Spider Licence – £99 per year.
Try out to see if you need a paid version.
14. OpenLinkProfiler – A FREE TOOL!
OpenLink Profiler – Is a Free version of SEO Profiler.

Helps you easily see backlinks from your competitors. Or, in their own words, “Our LinkDiagnosis tool can show you all the important information about your competitor’s links.”
Note! It has a Link Diagnosis Firefox Extension, which you can add to your browser.
17. Analyze Backlinks – A FREE TOOL
Analyze Backlinks – advertises itself as “a free backlinks checker tool. Unlimited usage and full data. Yahoo SiteExplorer alternative.”
Try it out and see if it satisfies your needs.
18. Rank Signals – A FREE TOOL
Rank Signals – Backlink Checker Tool & SEO Software
That is another FREE tool, which helps you “uncover SEO backlinks & traffic sources of your competitors.”

19. DigBacklink – A FREE TOOL!
digBacklink.com – A free Backlink Checker and SEO tool. It helps you check backlinks or inbound links to a domain and website of your choice.
Note! You must log in through Facebook. Without logging in you don’t get much from the tool.
